Born in 1833, George Vicat Cole owed his artistic education to his father, a totally self-taught and successful artist. Under his father's tuition the young Cole took Turner, Constable and Cox as the Great Masters upon which to model his work. However, he was also taught by his father to look towards the greatest source of inspiration: nature itself.
At 18 he was accepted at the British Institute and at the Society of British Artists and, a year later, he exhibited his first works at the Royal Academy. George Vicat Cole was a fashionable painter of his time and he is still admired for his delicate use of colour and his great sensitivity, balanced by the overall sense of a firm and sure brush. He died in 1893.
