James graduated in Fine Art at Falmouth School of Art and Design in 1990. After a year working at and exhibiting with the Bristol Printmakers Workshop he studied for an MA at Wimbledon School of Art, graduating in printmaking in 1994.
Initially influenced by English abstract and landscape painters such as Ivon Hitchens, Peter Lanyon and Patrick Heron, James art evolved through print into works of cultural satire with a diverse range of imagery drawn from William Blake to Star Trek. He has also had occasional forays into sculpture and ceramics as well as a continuing interest in photography.
