Jennifer Brownscombe Art Prints

Born in Pennsylvania, America in 1850, Jennie Brownscombe was a painter of both historical and genre scenes set in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

In the late 1860s Brownscombe commenced her art studies in New York, initially at the Cooper Union and then at the National Academy of Design. She was among the founders of the Art Students League, where she taught in the late 1870s before travelling to France to study with the American genre painter Henry Mosler in his Paris studio. Between the years 1888 and 1895, Brownscombe spent part of each year in Europe, where she kept a winter studio in Rome, and between 1908 and 1913 she shared a summer studio in the Catskills with George Henry Hall.

Brownscombe's work was brought before a broad and appreciative public not only by exhibiting extensively throughout America, but also in the form of magazine illustrations. Still painting at a great age, Brownscombe had several paintings nearing completion when she died in Long Island in 1936, aged eighty-six.
