Julius Stewart was an American painter of landscapes and genre scenes who achieved considerable success when exhibiting in France. He was born in September 1855 in Philadelphia, and died in Paris in January 1919.
Stewart was attracted to Paris to study, where he was tutored by Gérôme and de Madrazo. Whilst living in Paris he exhibited regularly, achieving an 'Honorable Mention' in 1855 and a third class medal in 1890. He became a Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur' in 1895 and an Officer in 1901.
He also exhibited in Germany, receiving Gold Medals at Berlin in 1891 and 1895, and at Munich in 1897 and 1901. He became a 'Chevalier de l'ordre de Leopold' in 1895.
