J.V.D. Aveelen Biography

Jan van den Aveelen was a Dutch engraver who was born in the middle of the 17th century and who lived in Leydon around 1696. He was employed chiefly by booksellers.

After the death of Willem Swidde, he was called to work in Sweden to assist with the huge work of art Suecia antiqua et hodierna. This work was completed in 1716 and contained 160 of his illustrations, one of which was published in 1678 and earned him widespread recognition. Later on in his life, van den Aveleen became a reader in the Dutch church of Stockholm, where he died, a poor man, in 1722.
